Letter from the Co-Presidents
What a year 2021 was.
We continue to navigate through a global pandemic with strength, resilience and resolve. The Friends of the Library are grateful for our members, donors, community supporters and volunteers. You give voice to the power of a vital public library as an uplifting community force, and as a resource to students. You recognize the richness the library brings to the lives of Anacortes residents. All offered freely and fairly, without charge.
In 2021, the Friends safely held - a May parking lot “trunk sale”, a sale during the Anacortes Arts Festival (August), and a December holiday lobby sale. The Friends joined Library staff at their booth at the Farmers Market twice this Summer. It is heartening and humbling to experience the outpouring of love for Anacortes Public Library and for the staff.
The Friends are holding two Open FriendShop Days February 4th/Friday, and February 5th/ Saturday, from 11am to 3pm. Come by to browse, buy and say “Hi”! Please spread the word to your pals and within your groups. Masks are required as the FriendShop follows all pandemic provisions in place for the Library.
The library is now accepting LIMITED book donations! They can take up to 5 books that were published in the last 5 years. Please do not bring more than 5 books at a time, or books that are more than 5 years old.
Bring donations to the library or drop off with a library staff member. Your donations to the Library FriendShop benefit library programs and services for all ages.
We sincerely hope and encourage you, as an individual, or as a household member, to continue Friends membership in the 2022 calendar year. Memberships support library collections, pro- gramming for children, and community events. They help foster reading and viewing, information exploration and information literacy. Friends members can be a voice at the table in times of tough municipal budgets, a reminder of the library as a crucial entity during a time when public library budgets are threatened across the nation when the need is so vast.
Our very best to you and your loved ones for 2022. ▪

What’s New in 2022
In February the Library will debut take and make kit for adults, a hands-on workshop, and we will continue our popular teen take and makes with book themed crafts. Thanks to the FOL, the library has been able to meet the demand for activities that families can do at home safely. Anacortes Public Library will also host more Humanities Washington programs via Zoom.
In the end of 2021, library staff were able to attend both outdoor holiday events hosted by the Anacortes Parks & Recreation Department, and hand out books while sharing library resources with hundreds of families at the annual Haunted Forest Walk and Winter Wonderland Walk. Seeing smiling faces gleefully talking about reading with our team reminded us all that while we’ve been apart, the library and our many programs have still supported learning and discovery throughout the pandemic.
As we look forward to 2022, we’re eager to return to more programs in-person when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we are supporting learners in the library, remotely through our virtual programs, and with our many partnerships. This year all Anacortes School District Students will have their library card numbers changed to their permanent student ID number, so that every student has easy access to their account throughout their time at ASD. This increases ease of access, and our staff is hard at work partnering with school staff to ensure every student knows about the many resources offered to them through the public library, including the many
incredible STEAM kits and learning resources. With the support of our generous FOL supporters, we are confident that ongoing take-home programs, and outdoor programs this summer, will continue to spark curiosity and discovery for all ages. ▪

Your Anacortes Library Card: Ticket To a Wider World of Libraries
Have you ever wanted a book or media item that Anacortes Public Library (APL) did not own? The unbelievable luck is that you have access to collections at many other library systems through your APL library card account, provided it is in good standing! This extension of public library service is known as reciprocal borrowing.
Reciprocal borrowing is when a patron physically goes to another public library system to borrow material. It began as an outgrowth of interlibrary loan, and is a convenient method of supplementing a library’s collections. It serves library patrons well in situations where they need an item quickly and are able to drive to another library system facility to obtain it. Many times, another library system may be convenient to a work location or a shopping destination. Staff at the home library (APL) are able to check other library’s catalogs to see where a title or collection may be accessible to you.
In a nutshell, reciprocal borrowing gives patrons of one public library walk-in, physical access to circulating collections at another library system when an agreement is in place. Its major difference from an interlibrary loan transaction is the patron moves from library to library, not the material.
Anacortes Public Library is a party to the Skagit County Interlocal Agreement. This agreement means that residents and property owners in Anacortes are able to open a library card account at APL and then use this card to also obtain library cards at any of the participating libraries in Skagit County. [Borrowing rules may differ, so please contact participating library systems directly with
questions about available services.]
Want to try this? As an APL library cardholder with a resident account, you can ask for a library card at the following libraries:
• Burlington Public Library, 820 E Washington Ave, Burlington, WA 98233
• Central Skagit Library, 110 W State St, Sedro Woolley, WA 98284
• La Conner Regional Library, 614 Morris St, La Conner, WA 98257
• Mount Vernon Library, 315 Snoqualmie St, Mt Vernon, WA 98273
• Upper Skagit Library, 45952 Main St, Concrete, WA 98237
Sno-Isle Regional Library System serves Island and Snohomish County patrons. In addition to serving residents of these counties Sno-Isle Regional Library also allows “library card holders in good standing who reside or own property of jurisdictions within Washington State that provide equitable tax support for public library services to obtain a Sno-Isle card”. This applies to card-holders of Anacortes Public Library.
So what are you waiting for? ▪
Storytimes, STEAM Kits & More: News from the Dr. Sylvia Maxson Children’s Library
I’m excited to share updates on programs for children and families at the Anacortes Public Library.
We continue to provide weekly virtual storytimes for families to enjoy via Facebook and the library website. We recently recorded our 200th session and none of those would have been possible without funds from the Friends of the Library. In March 2020 when the library closed and we had to switch from in-person to virtual storytimes, it was immediately apparent that we didn’t have the proper equipment. With FOL program funds we purchased camera equipment, lights, and a green screen which are now used several times a week. During each of these storytime sessions library
staff read wonderful stories, and we continue the important work of building early literacy skills through songs, fingerplays, felt board stories, and more. Families appreciate tuning into these recordings when it best fits their schedule and access them through the library website (library. cityofancortes.org).
With in-person programming currently on hold, families are enjoying our monthly Take and Make kits. We research and assemble 125 kits each month with everything necessary to complete a
6
craft or explore something new. There are kits for toddlers, elementary school children, and tweens & teens. These hands-on kits are ready on the first of each month and are available while supplies last. We have also been able to have hands-on activities for families to try when they visit the children’s library. The supplies for all of this creative explora tion is possible because of funds from the Friends of the Library.
Another opportunity for trying something new is with our STEAM Kits, with more than 60 avail able for checkout. The most recent kits were added with the $10,000 grant we received from HollyFrontier Puget Sound Refinery (formerly
Shell). The funds from this grant allowed us to add 30 new STEAM Kits to our collection. STEAM is an approach to learning that uses the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math to develop critical thinking skills and spark a lifelong interest in arts and science. Each kit has every thing families need to learn something new, and there’s something for all ages. These newest kits include:
• Code-a-pillar and Kinderbots teach the basics of programming to kids three to six.
• Ozobot robots take coding to the next level for ages five and older.
• StikBots spark creativity by allowing kids to make their own animated movies with poseable characters and props with themes including dinosaurs, monsters, safari, and more.
• Korg Volca Synthesizers help learners of all ages explore music.
• Magna-Tiles allows kids of all ages to build creations, using their imagination and colorful magnetic tiles.
Library staff will continue to add new STEAM Kits. There will also be a Library of
Things which will offer items for patrons to checkout and use at home, and we look forward to sharing details with you as that program launches in 2022. ▪

Treasurer’s Report: 2021
I’m pleased to report that we finished out 2021 in good financial shape, thanks (again) to our many and generous donors. You, our supporters and donors, make it possible for the Friends to continue helping the Anacortes Public Library purchase books for children, teens and adults, along with supplies for educational STEM and STEAM kits and other programs.
FoL Board members and volunteers have also held a number of fundraising events over the past year, experimenting with a variety of venues and themes to sell our used books. Examples include participation at the Library’s Farmer’s Market booth; a sale in spring—held in the library parking
lot—in which FoL members sold books from the trunks or backs of their vehicles; and brief open ings of our newly renovated and reorganized FriendShop book store.
We continue to sell books from the library lobby; stock is refreshed regularly, and we encourage you to check it out. We hope to see you at our Special Sale February 4th and 5th when we plan to open the bookstore for several hours.
Thank you for your support and here’s to a healthy 2022. ▪
