Friends of the Anacortes Public Library

Minutes for May 12, 2022 Board meeting in the community room at the Anacortes Library.

Present:
Board members: Kandy Dubuque and Megan Taylor (Co-Presidents), Susan Rooks (Vice-President) Hal Rooks (Treasurer), Tress Connolly (Secretary), Patrick Gallagher.

Library Staff: Jeff Vogel (Director), Leslie Wilson (Librarian), Diana Farnsworth (Librarian)

Library Board of Trustees Liaison: Christina Hansen

Presidents
Kandy presided and called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m..

Susan Rooks proposed a change in the meeting agenda. She requested that the vote to approve the June 18th booksale be held in the closed board session scheduled for after the general meeting. Kandy moved and Hal seconded a motion to do so. The motion was unanimously approved.

Secretary
Susan Rooks, who stood in as secretary at the April 14, 2022 meeting sent the minutes to the Board in advance for review. Megan moved and Tress seconded a motion to approve the minutes. They were unanimously approved by the board.
Tress reported that all thank-you cards for donations and membership dues have been sent.

Treasurer
Hal sent the treasurer’s reports to the board in advance for review. Susan moved and Megan seconded a motion to approve the reports. They were unanimously approved.
Hal reported that donations are down in general, but the use of PayPal for donations is increasing. He also said that book sales in the lobby are doing better and sales in the Friendshop has averaged to be $200/month.

Old Business
Before the May meeting, Kay O’Connell sent an email message to the Board that she was resigning because of her husband’s health issues. Her husband’s health has improved, however, and she is therefore withdrawing that resignation and will remain on the Board.

FriendShop
Kandy said that she would like to extend the shop hours by adding a shift either Monday or Friday making the hours 10-12:30 and 12:30-3. She requested help calling existing volunteers and coordinating schedules. She also would like people available for back up and to shelve books. She also said that she accepts book donations people bring to the shop directly and then takes them back to the library shelf for review.
Patrick suggested looking at online scheduling options.

Book Donations

Tress suggested removing the 5/5 posters and extending the parameters for book donations to include popular books that have a publication date older than the last five years. Susan suggested targeting genres needed and offered to make new posters. She will also make a poster advertising a special sale for Children’s books.

New Business
Prospective New Board Member
Megan sent a statement of interest from Peter Allen in advance for review and read an additional statement. Voting took place in the closed board session.

Board Members Resigning at End of Term (November 2022)
Tress asked that any current members who anticipate resigning at the end of their three-year term identify themselves so it will be more clear how many new members will be needed. Tress and Megan both stated that they would be resigning.

Staggered Terms for Board Members
There was a discussion about staggering board terms to insure having enough members at all times. Details to be worked out at subsequent meetings.

Credit Card for Library Staff
Hal sent information in advance on procuring a credit card for library staff to make FOL paid purchases. Details, including monetarily limit and name on the card, were discussed. Susan moved and Megan seconded to approve a credit card in Leslie Wilson’s name with a limit of $7,000/month. The motion was approved unanimously.

Library Updates
Jeff said the circulation is up and that program planning is in full swing.

Library Board of Trustees Liaison Update
Christina Hansen announced that her term as liaison is up. Nancy Fisher-Allison will be the new liaison.

The next Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 2 o’clock in the community room at the Library.

Susan moved and Hal seconded a motion to adjourn. The meeting was adjourned at 3:15.
